University of Toledo Chemical & Environmental Engineering

Graduate Program

The Department offers Masters and Doctoral degrees inChemical and Environmental Engineering. Students can choose to work on a variety of research topics and must complete a thesis on that topic. Specific information regarding the program is available in the Graduate Student Handbook.

The Department invites applications from students with degrees in chemical engineering, with GPA's of 2.8/4.0 or higher. Students are admitted into the program mostly during the Fall Semester. The application deadline for Fall admission with financial assistance is January 15 of each year. Applications received after the deadline will automatically be considered for the next year. International students are expected to complete the GRE and TOEFL exams and submit the test scores well before that deadline. The minimum scores are 550 for TOEFL (or 213 for the computer-based test) and 500, 700 and 4.5 for the verbal, quantitative and analytical writing sections for the GRE. Although these scores and other qualifications are considered, admission to the program is primarily based on the applicants' grades in undergraduate and graduate courses.

Admission to the graduate program is very competitive. Although specific numbers vary from year to year, we admit approximately 8-12 students each year while we receive over 200 applications. Consideration of applications for admission and financial aid begins shortly after the January 15 deadline and students awarded admission will be notified before the end of March. If you have additional questions please contact the Graduate Program Director, Glenn Lipscomb.

The department offers several forms of financial aid to both US and international students. Entering graduate students are usually awarded Graduate Teaching Assistantships. After the first year students typically switch over to a Graduate Research Assistantship. Additionally, we nominate outstanding students for fellowships awarded by the University of Toledo as well as by several US government agencies and private foundations. All graduate students currently in the program receive financial support.

The application forms to the graduate program are available in PDF format. You will need the freely downloadable Adobe Acrobat program, version 3.0 or higher, to read and print these documents. The following documents are available (you may also download these from the UT Graduate School website):

A Message to International Students

The Department welcomes applications from qualified international students. We also encourage the use of the Internet in the application process. However, in recent years we have begun receiving thousands of electronic requests for printed application materials from international students. Even if we overlook the contradiction in using the Internet to request printed documents which are available electronically, we simply do not have the resources to mail so much printed material. Moreover, only a small fraction of these requests result in completed applications to our graduate program. As a result we are forced to institute the rule that, henceforth, only the electronic versions of the application forms will be sent in response to electronic requests. If any student wishes to receive printed application materials, they need to make that request in writing. We apologize for any inconvenience this might cause legitimate applicants to our program, but we hope this will motivate everyone to convert to the use of the Internet for the application process.

If you have any questions regarding the above policy, please contact the Graduate Director, Glenn Lipscomb, at the e-mail address: glenn.lipscomb@utoledo.edu.
